What Are Sun Salutations?

Sun Salutations, or Surya Namaskar, are a sequence of yoga poses performed in a fluid, rhythmic manner, often used as a warm-up in yoga classes. The sequence is designed to stretch and strengthen the entire body, engage the core, and boost circulation.

Doing a few Sun Salutations first thing is like giving your body a little reset — a bit like that first cup of coffee, but with movement instead of caffeine. It’s a lovely way to shake off stiffness, feel more connected to yourself (and the day ahead), and gently wake up both body and mind.

The Physical Benefits of Sun Salutations

When we sit for long periods, certain areas of the body tend to get tight—especially the hip flexors, hamstrings, and chest. At the same time, other areas, like the core and glutes, can become weak from lack of use.

On a physical level, Sun Salutations provide a full-body workout. The sequence involves a combination of standing poses, forward folds, backbends, and inversions that stretch and strengthen the body in all directions. Some of the key benefits include:

✅ Improved Flexibility: The repeated forward folds and stretches help lengthen muscles and increase flexibility in the spine, hamstrings, and hips.

✅ Stronger Core: Each round of Sun Salutations engages the core to maintain balance and posture.

Increased Circulation: The continuous movement promotes blood flow, helping to oxygenate muscles and tissues.

Better Posture: The strength and flexibility gained from this practice can help correct poor posture by engaging the muscles that support the spine.

But the benefits aren’t only physical.

A Moving Meditation for Busy Minds

Beyond the physical, Sun Salutations are a powerful tool for calming the mind.

As someone who first began yoga because I found it challenging to sit still and slow down, I’ve always appreciated how the flowing sequence of Sun Salutations helps quiet my busy thoughts.

The beauty of this practice lies in its ability to combine movement and breath, creating a moving meditation that can help you step away from mental clutter and focus your mind.

Research has shown that mindful movement, like yoga, can help manage symptoms of ADHD and reduce stress. A study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders found that regular yoga practice improved attention, impulse control, and executive functioning in people with ADHD.

By synchronising breath and movement, Sun Salutations allow you to stay in the present moment, fostering clarity and focus while calming the nervous system. This practice can be particularly helpful when dealing with the constant rush of thoughts.
